Storytelling: Who doesn’t love a good reality?

I am fascinated with the idea that we create our own reality in order to find comfort with the decisions we make in our life. We can exist in our skin and find peace within our world when the story we tell ourselves is better than a story someone else makes up for us. We share a common environment and sometimes a common language but our realities and our stories are unique only to us.

This body of work was created with photographs of specific architectural locations found while I was traveling. I then changed the context of those places by altering the environment around those buildings using collage. Some photographs were blended together in a photo app and others were collaged together in Photoshop. Sometimes I added a new ground and sky; other times graffiti characters I found on the streets of Berlin. These collages were printed on inkjet film and then transferred to gessoed panels.

Storytelling is also a collection of lyrical stories written by Seth McCombs about a fictitious town-Hickeyville and the interesting characters that live there.  I was super excited to collaborate with Seth on this series because of his ability to create wonderful imaginative stories.  Seth seems to live in a more interesting parallel universe filled with sea creatures and superheroes and is guided daily by his wicked sense of humor.  In this collaboration I gave Seth the finished panels without an explanation of where the photographs were from and I asked him to create a story for each one.
